can't wait for the ukulele post. My husband and I both play a little, but I'd love to teach the kids. We're moving from our home in Hawaii to the mainland and I don't want the kids to loose their local roots! Which book did you find best appropriate for your kids?
Well Molly, we use Mike Jackson Uke'n'play Ukelele for Kids. Amongst other things, I'm musically challenged as well, so Mike Jackson was perfect for us. He uses three basic chords so the kids are playing C chord right away then moving on to F & G7. The play-a-long CD has 25 fun songs on it with the words found in the book. The kids love the song list. We're about to move on to the Uke 'n Play Country Ukulele. That will be interesting! We have been toying with the idea of getting a banjo for our son's 6th birthday. He has been asking for lessons. Maybe the uke will be a good starting point to see if really will stick with it.

I played uke as a kid and loved it, Id love to add this to our schooling! How fun!
Oh well this is right up my alley! LOL We were just at a Luau (how do you spell that?)last Friday night at church and there was a missionary from Tonga, who apparently has won the national ukelele competition for the last 6 years, and he was ukulele-ing (I'm allowed to invent words right?! LOL ) up a storm. I leaned over to my hubby and told him that he ought to start learning the guitar. He agreed! And I've kind of being thinking it might be good to just have a guitar laying around the house for the kids to tinker with and see what they might be able to teach themselves. This book sounds like it would be the perfect start! LOL So....I'm IN!

AHHHH!!! you quoted me! That is TOO funny! We're finally all settled in at our mainland home and I just read this blog post. Love it! Thanks so much for the tips. My mom said for christmas she'll be sending Uke's from Hawaii for the kids. I'm going to be ordering this CD for sure! The kids will love it and I can't wait for my home to be filled with the sounds of strumming! Thanks a bunch and can't wait to hear how you guys do with the next bunch of lessons.
